At Zen Dog Training Dojo, we believe every dog has the potential to become a calm, confident, and well-behaved companion with the right guidance. Founded by Benjamin Frederick, a lifelong professional dog trainer and behavior specialist, our mission is to strengthen the bond between dogs and their families through compassionate, effective, and results-driven dog training.
Born in Birmingham, Alabama, Benjamin was raised in the world of professional dog training at Ralph Gibson's World of Dogs, a highly respected dog training facility owned and operated by his stepfather, renowned dog trainer Ralph Gibson Jr. Growing up surrounded by more than 75 dogs at a time gave Benjamin a unique, hands-on education that shaped his lifelong passion for understanding canine behavior and helping people communicate with their dogs.
With decades of real-world experience in dog obedience training, puppy training, behavior modification, and owner education, Benjamin has dedicated his career to helping dogs and their owners build lasting relationships based on trust, respect, and clear communication.
In 2009, Benjamin created The Educated Dog Program at the Greater Birmingham Humane Society. Over the next three years, he trained staff and volunteers to safely and effectively work with dogs experiencing behavioral challenges caused by neglect, fear, and abuse. The program focused on preparing adoptive families for success by teaching them how to properly introduce a newly adopted dog into their home, significantly reducing the number of dogs returned to the shelter between 2009 and 2012.
Inspired by the program's success, Benjamin expanded his services in 2013 by bringing The Educated Dog Program directly into the homes of families throughout Birmingham, Alabama, offering personalized in-home dog training tailored to each dog's unique needs. Whether working with puppies, newly adopted rescue dogs, or dogs with behavioral issues, Benjamin's greatest reward is seeing the moment when communication finally "clicks" between dog and owner.
In 2022, The Educated Dog Program evolved into Zen Dog Training Dojo, combining decades of proven training experience with a philosophy centered on balance, patience, and understanding. Today, Benjamin proudly serves families throughout the Greater Birmingham area as the city's original Dog Training Sensei, providing personalized dog training solutions that create happier dogs, more confident owners, and lifelong results.
